User Reviews about ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-WT 10.1-Inch White Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life)

7~11 battery life.
fast enough.
quiet.
simple design (interface, keyboard, and everything else that constitutes as "design")
Good price. -- The best
I love the fact that the battery last a long time and also that it is light and compact. However, it is a SLOW computer! Sometimes it takes minutes until the application is fully launched and ready for work. Can be very annoying.

Also understand that the battery lasts significantly less (probably around 4 hrs or so) when you have your wifi on.

-- OK for basic functions but need patience to operate it.
Okay, so to be up front I switched to a Mac 5 years ago and swore I'd never go back to a PC.

I manage yacht races for a living and need to carry a computer out on the water with me, so that once the racing is over for the day I can post results. Water and computers don't mix well and there's a good chance this computer is going to get a saltwater bath.

I'm still loyal to Apple, as I'm just not smart enough to figure out all the things you have to do in order to make a PC work. However Apple's computers are just too expensive to take out on the water, so here I am buying a PC!

So here's my review:

PRO's

Looks great, lightweight, nice screen, keyboard is workable, easy carry and cheap enough that when it gets a salwater bath I won't cry.

CON's

It is a PC, there's just no getting around that. Even with Windows 7 its still clunkier and more difficult to do simple things. An example, I bought the 2gb memory upgrade and installed it per the instructions. (I used to build computers years ago) When I fired up the computer it didn't recognize that I now had 2gb instead of 1gb. Without touching the memory chip it finally recognized the memory on the 5th start-up. Go figure. But that's getting into Windows not this machine.

If you're a PC fan and want a small notebook, I'd really recommend you consider this notebook. And if it gets wet, who cares? Its only $300! -- For a PC, its great
9/8/10 update: One new glitch discovered...screen scrambles and CPU hangs when I disconnect the power supply while unit is still running. This requires pulling the battery and a hard boot...not a happy solution. Dropped it one star as a result.

on the plus side, I subsituted this for my dell laptop on a recent business trip and it was great. Not only is it less to lug around, but the form factor actually allows you to work on an airplane tray table!

-----------

Everything I expected from a modestly priced netbook. Just watched a hi-def (960x540px at 1200kbps) video via the wi-fi connection last night and it was much smoother than I expected. It only stuttered when I tried to up the bandwitdth to 1700kbps. Video conferencing on Skype seems to work fine (within the limits of the camera). The form factor is great, the seashell shape actually offers a little more grip when carrying around closed than something more rectangular. Good ergonomics overall.

My only frustration is with the touchpad. While I generally hate touchpads anyway, preferring the keyboard nipple intead (the heel of my thumbs seem to activate the pad and move the cursor to unexpected locations while typing), this one seems to have a particuarly touchy left button which will click when I pass my finger near it. Not a problem if using a external mouse which I prefer anyway, but a more frequent problem than I would expect and annyoying when it does. That and trying to drag and drop with a touchpad is not intuitive or easy.

As noted in some reviews, the screen only tilts back about 70 degrees and is borderline unbalanced when fully extended. Not a big problem just something to be aware of.

I was also pleased to discover that this had a 250GB drive, rather than the 160 that I was expecting. If you review the Asus website, you will note that the 1001p does not (or didn't when I ordered mine) show the availability of a 250 drive for this model. Neither did it suggest Win7 starter was available either but this was at least listed as a feature on the Amazon website.
