We bought this unit to take along on a two-week driving vacation.
We found wifi easily in the majority of places we stayed, and this netbook served us well to check news and weather and keep up with emails while on the road. Easy to set up and use. -- Great travel aid
I love my Dell Mini. I picked it up Refurbished for $263 after taxes from Amazon's Warehouse Deals, which was more than what I wanted to pay for a netbook. But, even with Amazon's Customer Service dodging my questions about warranty issues, I could not resist buying this since is has HDMI, TV Tuner, 6-cell battery, webcam, card reader, and a decent sized harddrive.
However, As soon as I got started with it I was not very pleased with the speed and performance. Basic tasks and startup seemed slow, the TV tuner struggled to get started and change channels, and Updates weren't downloading. It was all because of Windows 7. After a few hours of trying to understand Windows 7 I gave up with it and decided it was time to start from scratch. Because Dell was kind of enough to provide a cd-rom with all the drivers this was not as difficult as it could have been. A quick format, installation of Windows XP Professional and installing the drivers and it was up and running smoothly. I put in a USB Bluetooth dongle I picked up from [...] for $2 so now it has bluetooth capabilities, I installed Gizmo+GoogleVoice so now its a VOIP phone, installed OpenOffice, and I ditched the cumbersome MacAfee and installed BitDefender 2010 (has Laptop mode).
I do not understand why Dell is sullying their products with Windows 7. The hardware in these Minis are really not capable of handling the ridiculous amounts of resources required to run that OS. When you factor that Windows 7 requires 1GB of RAM while Windows XP only requires 128MB To perform essentially the same tasks it seems puzzling why anyone would want to burden their system with Windows 7. It also doesn't help that Dell makes it nearly impossible to add/upgrade the memory. If XP had come installed on this I probably would have given this 5 stars.
