User Reviews about HP Mini 210-1030NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life
After lots of research looking for a good, inexpensive netbook for my husband to use while traveling and as a second computer at home I had narrowed it down to the HP Mini 210 and the Dell Inspirion 10. The reviews were pretty much the same for both computers and price was the deciding factor with the HP being about $50 less. Using one day prime shipping we received the computer on a saturday and 11 days later the HP computer wouldn't boot up at all, an hour and half phone call to HP tech support we were diagnosed with a failed hard drive. Alright, it happens and I did read the review where the hard drive had died but thought its one time thing but apparently not. The HP warranty did cover the repairs but we would have been responsible all shipping costs to send the computer to HP for repairs because we lived far from a service center. Thankfully we bought the computer from Amazon and after a 7 minute conversation with a very helpful Amazon employee we were reassured that Amazon would fully refund the purchase because it was defective and within 30 days from date of purchase. I had return labels in my email inbox within minutes and packed the defective computer back in the box and dropped off at UPS that afternoon. Amazon fully refunded the purchase including the shipping charge (One day Prime). My husband now has a refurbed Dell Inspirion 10 purchased through Dell Outlet for $240 with an upgraded service plan.
All in all, except for the hard drive issue, the HP Mini is a decent entry level computer, the keyboard is a decent size for working on and its pretty, with the shiny case. Windows 7 starter is a bit lacking in features but does what you need it too. The HP does have a feature where you can check email and facebook and listen to music without booting up windows which is kinda cool but its limiting, we found that it was just easier to wait for windows to load fully. I was truly disappointed with HP's customer service policies, the people I spoke with were helpful and easy enough to talk to, although it is an outsourced program like so many.
-- Hard drive died in less than 2 weeks! Warranty less than ideal, returned to Amazon!
Several reviewers have complained about the lack of Home, End, PageUP and PageDown keys. They are correct; there are no dedicated keys for this. BUT, if you press the fn key + left arrow you get the Home key. If you press the fn key + the right arrow you get the End key. If you press the fn key + the down arrow, you get the PageDown key. If you press the fn key + the up arrow, you get the PageUp key. This is not obvious because this is not marked on the keys in a secondary color and you have to get deep into the manual to find out about this. BUT,it works fine. It is unfortunate that HP did not include some large card in the box to explain this, but once you find out about it, then there is no problem.
Overall, I love this laptop. Keyboard is awesome for a netbook. The only thing I regret is getting the glossy screen. The 1030nr has the matte screen. The battery life is less than the ASUS models. This seems to be because HP has less aggressive power saving choices. For example, the CPU is not slowed down when running on battery in the default installation. So when you are on battery the computer is faster but uses more battery power than the ASUS models. (You can confirm that ASUS slows down their netbooks by looking at the Geekbench benchmark scores. You will notice two clusters of scores. The two clusters come from benchmarks with the ASUS netbooks plugged in and on battery) You can create a more aggressive power saving plan in Windows 7. You can slow the CPU down to as much as 60% of full speed. (Setting the power plan below 60% does nothing additional.) I leave the CPU on full speed because 6 hours battery life in real world usage is plenty for me, and I like having a more responsive netbook. If you want maximum battery life and don't care about slowing down your netbook, you should probably choose an ASUS model. -- Home, End, PageUp, and PageDown
The worst part is that it comes with windows 7 starter. I have not heard of this version before, t is very limited(you can't even change the wallpaper of your computer). you are forced to consider an upgrade.
The other thing i dint like is the strength of the wi-fi receiver. I had to buy a wireless usb receiver to improve the quality of my signal.
Battery time is great and so is the price. Liked the keyboard size too. -- good but could be better
I love the small size. It is not bulky and goes anywhere. I can fit into a backpack easily. Easy to use and the build in webcam is great.
Neva -- Love My Mini
Obviously not for playing high end games. I use mine for writing and surfing the web, and Twitter. The keyboard's excellent, the start-up's a little slow, but waking up from hibernate does the trick in terms of using it quickly.
Biggest problem is the drain that comes from turning on the wireless, but this may be typical for notebooks. -- Great little computer.
