This is my first netbook. I've gone through a notebook at the clip of one every two and a half years, so I thought I'd give this guy a try. I selected it because of the 10" screen, six cell battery and the N280 chip set. This is the least expensive netbook i've found to meet those criteria. I comes with a little bit of trial software bloat which I promptly removed. It connects easily the net through both the Wireless and the Ethernet connections. I use it with MS Office and the Visual C++ Express Studio, I cannot complain about performance at all.
The webcam gives a clear crisp image. I had to search the web to figure out how to enable it (Function + F6 key). Same for the wireless (Function + F11 key). The documents allude to this but I don't often RTFM. -- MSI U123

Great little unit. Should really have built in bluetooth and Mobile Wireless (aka WWAN). I upgraded the memory to 2GB and put Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 operating system. This O/S and this unit together work very well.

I selected this unit due to the fact that it was a 100% compatible on the Ubuntu website. I am NOT a windows fan and avoid it when I can.

The H/W is light, battery life is good, not as good as advertised. About 4hrs 30mins of constant use with Wifi on.

If you go the Ubuntu route you need to be a little technical as for most people it is a different O/S and you may need some tinkering. I did not need to tinker as it worked 100% after install. I created 4 user accounts on the MSI for the family, including one account that has admin privileges.

With 6 mins of instruction my whole family is able to use this to print, surf the web with firefox and use Open Office which is the opensource equivalent to Microsoft Office.

I have been able to successfully tether my Nokia e71 to Ubuntu and can get on ATT 3G

Once the 11" versions of these hit, I will buy again.

So far so good. Standard shipping (free) took a couple weeks. Unwrapped and charged up and after the computer installed the operating system everything appears to be ok. Installation of its software created a partitioned drive which I'm not too happy about. The touch pad has an annoying feature in that any tap, even a very light tap, is an enter command. It bothered me so much I had to get tech advice from the manufacturer who sent me a link for a different touch pad driver. The driver required me to download another program to extract the data which as a novice was a somewhat complicated procedure. But now everything seems to be just fine. I recieved my U123 on 9/15/09 and so far it has been working great! Obviously I've only had it a few days but it has proven to be very useful and reliable. I actually converted this netbook into a hackintosh and have found it quite refreshing compared to windows xp. The 6-cell battery lasts around 4:30 running OSX which is good enough for me as I am typically not away from a power source longer than 3 hours. I upgraded the ram to 2g just for a nice performance boost since I usually run lots of applications simultaneously. As others have said this model comes with NO BUILT IN BLUE TOOTH or N wireless. While many may not care its good to know since lots of places list all u123's as having these features. The only issue I have had has been that trackpad scrolling doesn't work which has been a problem even when XP was installed. Im guessing faulty trackpad at the moment but I've dealt with it because its not a big deal to me and I didn't feel like rma'ing since I needed a working netbook for the next couple of days. A very nice product for the price and for what it aims to do. The case is solid, the display is fine, though the height of the screen affects some types of online reading. The battery lasts long enough for my needs. I get about two hours of life from it. It's light and easy to carry around. It's a great unit for writing on your own somewhere or bringing to a meeting. If you're looking for a light, portable way to get on the Internet, check e-mail, surf web sites, and to do basic office functions, this works really well. I like the fact that it has VGA out and USB ports. I don't think it would work for me as my only computer, but as a supplemental computer, it occupies a useful niche.

If you are expecting a similar experience as you get with a larger laptop, you may be disappointed by a few aspects of this machine. The trackpad is too sensitive and XP doesn't appear to have a control panel to moderate its sensitivity. When I type, the trackpad picks up my left thumb and makes the cursor jump. I'm getting better and knowing how to hold my hands when I type, though. Also some of they keys to the side are half-keys, and so it takes a little practice to find where they are when you are typing. The left mouse button has a dead spot in it. Sometimes you have to press it in a certain region of the button to get it to work.

I was caught off guard by the fact that the wireless radio and the camera were off by default. I had to turn them on via a function key stroke. Not a big deal once I realized it, but for a while I thought I had a computer that wasn't functioning properly.

If you want to listen to audio while using this computer, use the audio jack. The speakers are too weak to let you properly hear a video or audio file.

According to the sticker on the back, the warranty is voided by upgrading the memory to 2 Gigabytes. That's a shame. Simply taking the back off and popping out the memory card seems like a minor invasion into the computer. It's very easy to do, by the way. And upgrading to 2 Gigabytes improved the machine's performance.

Even though there are some aspects of this machine that don't stack up to a traditional laptop, neither does the price. So, on the whole, given the price and my purpose for the machine, I'm satisfied with it.
